There is an excellent rebuttal to “all things Bill Maher” on RespectfulInsulance:
The 2009 recipient of the Richard Dawkins Award (a.k.a Bill Maher): Antivaccine lunatic and quackery supporter
Here we go again. The 2009 recipient of the Richard Dawkins Award, anti-vaccine wingnut and lover of cancer quackery Bill Maher, decided to use the occasion of the season finale of Real Time with Bill Maher to answer some of the criticisms that have been leveled against him. All I can say is this: I’m incredibly grateful that this is the season finale of Maher’s show. I don’t think I can take much more of his moronic anti-science stances being proudly trumpeted
It was painful to watch and showed very much that Bill Maher still doesn’t get it. In fact, if anything, he escalated his quack arguments to a whole new level. True, he states up front that he isn’t a germ theory denialist, lamely claiming that maybe he was a “bit too cocky” when he said that diet and healthy living (plus avoiding the ubiquitous “toxins”) would protect him from the flu, but that’s a load of steaming, stinking, toxin-laden bullshit, …
Please do hop on over to Orac’s blog and invest a few minutes to read his post. And in case you are just now waking up from a coma or some other incommunicado condition, he also has that infamous YouTube clip posted.
A bit of a snarky aside: My only hesitation in recommending this Brilliant Rant is that “Orac” hides behind a pseudonym. Perhaps I’m in the minority, but if one is going to attack someone, and do it with such caustic alacrity, one should “own” their statements and positions. Even as WRONG as Bill Maher is at least he “owns” his stupidity and ignorance.

Orac is one of the least hard-to-identify pseudonymous bloggers out there. He often posts exactly the same posts under his name on Science-Based Medicine. He has also been “outed” (if you can call it that) numerous times, by people who get excited that they have “discovered” his real name.

True. However, general “stumble upon the site” readers (here) are not privy to Flublogia’s “personalities”. It’s a personal gripe I suppose… if one is going to snark off — directly — about someone, i.e., a direct attack such as occurred on the reference post by Orec, irrespective of the fact that I agreed with everything he said, one should do so with head held high and without the cloak of even a thin veil of anonymity.
It has been pretty well shown that those who participate behind a pseudonym are ruder, more vicious, mean spirited, etc. Now, I am not without my own rants and tirades… some quite “caustically alacritous”, and while I blog under a pseudonym on this site my real name is splashed all over it, and one needn’t go hunting or digging or searching.
Further, it is not my place to “out” him. Testicular fortitude does not automatically accompany a caustic wit…..
