The multinational miner has a combined workforce of more than 1,600 employees and contractors at its East Boulder and Stillwater mines in the Beartooth Mountains. Workers bus to the mines from as far away as Billings, more than 50 miles to the northeast.

The mining operation eliminated more than a hundred jobs in November 2023 because of poor market conditions for platinum group metals, or PGMs, which include platinum, palladium, rhodium, and iridium. Palladium is a critical element in emissions controlling catalytic converters in automobiles.
